Indiana Hauntings: The Grey Lady of Willard Library

In the town of Evansville Indiana, there is the Willard Library. It is a very special library, not for its volumes of books or its beautiful Victorian Gothic architecture, but for the ghost that is said to haunt its halls.

The Willard Library is the oldest public library in the state of Indiana. Over 110 years old, the beautiful building is near the downtown area of Evansville and has long been believed to be haunted by a ghost referred to as “The Grey Lady”.

The ghost was first seen in 1937 by a janitor. He claimed to see a lady in all grey including grey shoes and a grey veil. He said he saw her as he was entering the basement to tend to the coal furnace. It frightened him so badly that he dropped his flashlight. It was then that the image dissolved. He left his position at the library shortly after that.

Since that time, the library has experienced many unexplained occurrences including: Water turning on and off, the smell of perfume, feeling cold in certain areas of the building, strange noises, books and furniture found to be moved from their original places, the feeling of something touching a visitor’s hair or earrings, and odd items found inside the library.

The grey lady isn’t always so subtle. Many patrons claim to have had encounters with her and other ghosts in the library. One patron reported seeing the grey lady in the elevator. A local weatherman claimed to have seen her as well. Policemen responding to the security alarm at the library one night saw two ghosts in the upstairs windows of the library. Lecturers from the University of Southern Indiana were visiting the library and saw the grey lady looking into the water.

The library has been investigated many times by paranormal investigators and ghost hunters. Because of the activity surrounding the Willard Library, people flock to the library every October for the ghost tours sponsored by the library and cameras have been set up so that would be ghost hunters can try to locate the ghost from the comfort of their home. The site features images that refresh every 20 seconds from the cameras set up in the Children’s Room, basement hall, and Research Room of the library. Will you be one of the lucky ones that spot the grey lady and finally prove that she does in fact exist?
